MA Project Title: 'The Adorned Humanity'

During my MA study, I became highly interested in the fact that humans have been adorning themselves across the world for centuries; from ancient Chinese dynasties, Japanese Geisha, to Native American embroidery and African tribal jewellery. The practice of adornment is an established human ritual, not only to convey wealth or social status; but also as a form of self-expression, identification, and empowerment. This initial investigation sparked my concept and lead to a full body of research relating to this subject and a body of physical exploration work, through an embroidery & embellishment design practice.

‘Adornment’ has a synonymous link with women and craft and often creates tangible connections between generations as traditional skills are passed down from mother to daughter. In today’s contemporary world, where fashion and style is of increasing significance and we continue to question the practice of fast fashion. Items of adornment that project a strong personal identity, hold more than just monetary value, and act as talismans of female empowerment; are more important than ever.

The exploration of sentimental and emotional longevity and the personal connection we share with items of adornment such as garments, jewellery and accessories, has also been at the core of this highly personal project.

Hyper-edited photography of dramatic, atmospheric florals that both mimic and subvert nature, formed the aesthetic of this project. Masculine alien-like botanicals juxtaposed against the overtly feminine have taken a new approach on florals.

Explore below images of my final collection & development works, including opulent embroidered jackets and hyper embellished shoes which were produced in collaboration with Dr. Martens.

Through highly textural 3D embroidery, I have explored the concept of adornment, creating these richly embellished garments and accessory pieces, that I hope will possess a feeling of sentimental longevity and will be cherished and handed down in generations to come. I have utilised a combination of innovative digital machine embroidery, alongside couture level hand embellishment. This has been a highly process-led project and a huge part of my exploration has been into sequin work; inventing new ways to create height and texture through complex 3d sequin stacking techniques. I have also used intricate beading, cording & couching delicate threads to create poetic squiggles, and appliqué of hand cut elements in a rich array of fabrics from leathers and suedes to neon plastic.

From the bottom, you can see my initial developmental work through research, drawings and paper experiments. This is closely followed by initial embroidery samples, material sourcing and the beginnings of testing ideas on a form.
