Welcome to my digital MA reflective journal (now Live/public). This will highlight and reflect on key moments and points throughout the progression of my MA project and will include key words, events and images that have inspired my project to progress.

Entry 001: Adornment

The definition of Adornment:

"An adornment is generally an accessory or ornament worn to enhance the beauty or status of the wearer. They are often worn to embellish, enhance, or distinguish the wearer, and to define cultural, social, or religious status within a specific community. When worn to show economic status, the items are often either rare or prohibitively expensive to others. Adornments are usually colourful, and worn to attract attention. - Wikipedia definition"

This Key word has really formed the basis of my project at this early stage. My initial starting point of my MA has really been about going back to basics and stripping back all my preconceived ideas of my creative practice, to try to understand where my interest in adornment and decoration comes from.  Sometimes I find taking a moment to read through the true definitions of key words which inspire me, helps to form a better understanding of my initial thoughts and ideas.

I'm really interested in the idea of researching into specific adornments within different cultures from around the world and the symbolism of these, such as embroidery and jewellery within Indian cultures, beaded neckbands in african tribes or Japanese Geisha girls.

Other Key words that are inspiring me right now:

  • Maximalism
  • Ornamentation
  • Hyper-embellishment
